Ottawa Sportsmen's Club
Junior Shooting Sports Camp
2008 General Info
IMPORTANT STUFF!
- TRANSPORTATION:
It would be good to coordinate rides. If anyone can help with transportation
please let me know. We'll try to put people in the same area together for car pooling.
- EQUIPMENT:
We will provide all firearms, ammunition and targets. You must provide ear
protection and eye protection. Over the ear muffs run from $10 - $30 and are avilable
at most Sporting Goods outlets. Rick at Freeman's Gun Shop in the Northwoods Trading Post
in Hancock or Steve at Indian Country Sports in L'Anse are good local choices for both
glasses and muffs. Local Optometrists often carry yellow "poly-carb" flip-ups
for those that wear glasses (although your regular glasses will probably be OK).
Do not purchase the wrap around type glasses with wide temples. The wide temples prevent
a good seal for the ear muffs. I do recommend glasses with yellow poly-carbonate lenses.
The main thing to look for in both ear muffs and glasses is a proper fit. If they are
uncomfortable, they won't be worn! If ear or eye protection is a problem, give me a call.
Finally, bring along a thick glove or mitt for the non-dominant hand (IE: left mitt for
right handers) plus a thick sweatshirt/jacket, for the rifle portion of the camp. Even if
the weather is hot. Please don't forget.... this is IMPORTANT.
- CLOTHING:
Jeans and a sweatshirt work real well. A jacket for the inevitable cold front along
with a rain coat or poncho will help when it rains (we shoot rain or shine!). For the feet,
sneakers are OK, BUT, high top boots or hiking boots would be the best. You want good support
and comfort, so the sturdier the better.
- FOOD:
Pack a good lunch, but limit sweet stuff. It's a long outdoors day. To drink, pack milk or
juice. NO CAFFEINATED OR HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGES! (In fact, stay away from them for the
whole week! - PLEASE) There will be cold water for you to drink. Make sure you start the
day with a good breakfast.
- OTHER:
Bug dope for the black flies & ticks and sunscreen. There is some free time after lunch,
so bring a soccer or foot ball or maybe even a good book.
Finally, if any of the parents have the time and would like to watch or help with the program,
you are truly welcome.
