Dues and News Letter 2009
As we begin a new year it is time to remind you to remit your membership dues to the Ottawa Sportsmen’s
Club before April 1, 2009 to keep your membership from being interrupted. Please fill out the attached form
in its entirety and mail $25.00 to the membership secretary at your earliest convenience.
CHANGES FOR 2099
The Michigan United Conservation Club (MUCC) has notified its affiliate member clubs, of which the
Ottawa Sportsmen’s Club is one that the printed version of Michigan Out-of-Doors monthly magazine is no
longer going to be mailed to individual members free of charge. Any members wishing to continue
receiving the printed version of the magazine by mail will need to subscribe individually to MUCC. The
cost is $20.00 per year. However, a monthly, on line, digital copy, will be available for free to all members
that have access to the internet. The digital version is already available to all MUCC members on line.
Simply go to their website. xx xx xx_mu~ n~ _ and follow directions to the digital magazine. By entering your
MUCC member number (found on the address label of your printed magazine) you can have the digital
magazine e-mailed monthly to your e-mail address. It is really quite simple. No date has yet been given
when mailing of the magazine’s printed version will cease.
OSC HIGHLIGHTS OF 2008
In the last year we have remained very active, and the willingness of the membership to volunteer for the
many activities and events is very much appreciated. THANK YOU very much for you participation in
YOUR club.
- We continue the sponsorship of Tracks magazine in the following area schools: L’Anse, Baraga, Sacred
Heart, Arvon Twp., Ontonagon and Winona. Tracks is a monthly conservation oriented study aid for 4th,
5th ,and 6th grade students. Currently, 421 students receive this fine natural resource magazine in the
classroom each month during the school year. Each year the Club receives numerous letters of thanks for
this program from students and teachers alike. Tracks is published by the Michigan United Conservation
Clubs with which the Ottawa Sportsmen’s Club has been affiliated for more than 30 years.
- Our Club continues to support a conservation library for the L’Anse, Baraga, and Sacred Heart School
libraries. This program provides funding for natural resource and conservation oriented books, videos, and
periodicals for student use.
- We provided at no cost, hunter safety instruction for over 50 youth and adults this past year, in order that
they can learn to enjoy outdoor shooting sports properly and safely as well as qualify to purchase hunting
licenses. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources along with our OSC volunteers and certified
instructors conduct a first rate, hands on, class at the clubhouse and grounds for area youngsters and those
adults who have not previously held a Michigan hunting license.
- We conducted the 9th annual weekiong shooting sports camp for area youth 14-18 years of age in June
with 10 participants. This highly intensive detailed shooting camp teaches safety and competitive shooting
techniques for rifle, pistol, and shotgun as an athletic competition. More than 100 teens have now benefited
from learning the fine points of the shooting sport from a nationally recognized coaching staff and members
of the Club who are certified firearms instructors. This will continue to be an annual event at the Ottawa
Sportsmen’s Club.
- Our Junior Pistol Team placed third overall in the National Shooting Championships
for their age class at Camp Perry, Ohio, in July with tive youth participants. This opportunity
for National competition is a great incentive for a number of area teens.
- Our Club awarded $1000 in scholarships to area students studying Natural Resources at
MTU and granted the 1-lancock Middle School $500.00 for outdoor Science Lab Supplies.
- Partnered with the Lake Superior92s Huron River Restoration, Inc. to provide volunteers
for study sample stations on the Huron River and donated $1000.00 toward the purchase of a
Conductivity Meter to be used to monitor conditions on the Huron River Watershed.
- Our facilities at the Club on M-38 and at the Courtney Lake property continue to serve as
outdoor classrooms for area school functions.
- Our Range Committee continues to improve the facilities on our rifle range at the Club
grounds west of I3araga on M-38. The OSC range is the only range in Baraga County that is
open to the public and is used by area law enforcement officers, formal sport shooting groups
and individuals.
- All shooters are welcome to use the trap range Wednesday evenings, spring through fall.
Many shooters from the surrounding counties enjoy this evening of fun shooting. Youth 17
and under need only supply their own shells with all other expenses being absorbed by the
club.
- A successful 47th Annual Turkey Shoot was held the last Sunday in September. This event
is the number one source of income for the OSC. With indoor range, outdoor range, and trap
shooting keeping people challenged with firearms, and raffles and auctions on the inside of the
clubhouse, a large number of people had a very good time.
